Kansas City diesel prices reached records in late September, topping $6.25 per gallon, and have since eased to just under $6—about 70% above a year earlier. Higher fuel prices have increased costs for local farms and trucking companies, while regular gasoline prices are also above year-ago levels.
Persistently expensive diesel raises farm operating and freight costs, which can feed through to delivered feed and agricultural commodity prices. It is a cost-side pressure rather than a direct change in crop supply or demand.
