AHDB's winter planting survey put English oilseed rape area at 538,000 ha as of 1 December 2016, 1% below the 2016 harvested area. Plantings fell sharply in the East and North East, largely due to cabbage stem flea beetle risk, while the South West saw an 11% rise.
The survey estimated the four main crops at 2.59 million ha, broadly unchanged from 2016.
Flat-to-lower English rapeseed area suggests little change in domestic oilseed supply, so the regional shifts are unlikely to move prices much. Any rise in abandonment could tighten supply and support rapeseed meal values.
