South Korea confirmed its first highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak of the winter at a layer farm in Yeoncheon on November 4, with an H5-positive case also found at a broiler-duck farm in Jangheung the following day. The government is tightening controls, including advance registration for people and vehicles entering layer farms, after 11.34 million laying hens were culled in the previous winter and egg prices subsequently surged.
Further outbreaks and culling could reduce egg output, with restocking taking six to nine months to restore production and potentially tightening supply and lifting egg prices. Stronger biosecurity may limit spread and temper that risk.
