China’s national average live-hog price fell to 4.42 yuan per jin on November 5, down 0.09 yuan from the previous day and 4.75% from a week earlier. Producers were marketing animals actively while slaughterhouses and consumers remained cautious, leaving supply in excess and prompting expectations of continued near-term weakness.
Competitive selling and weak pork demand are pressuring live-hog prices and provide little incentive for herd expansion. Lower hog profitability may eventually drive further production cuts, but those would support prices only after a lag.
