Mosaic reported a quarterly net and operating loss, with higher sulfur costs forcing curtailments in phosphate production. The company also reduced its full-year potash production forecast after geological problems at its Esterhazy operation in Saskatchewan, while expecting some sulfur-cost relief from a cheaper contract early next year.
Expensive sulfur is constraining phosphate fertilizer production, tightening supply and supporting fertilizer prices. Reduced potash output may also limit availability, although the expected lower-cost sulfur contract could ease phosphate production pressure next year.
