Cenovus plans to shut its Lloydminster ethanol plant on December 15, 2026, after an economic review, while maintaining the facility as it considers future uses. The plant has bought about 350,000 tonnes of grain annually and can produce 130 million litres of ethanol and about 130,000 tonnes of dried distillers grains per year.
The closure removes a regional grain buyer, reducing demand for grain used at the plant, while also cutting a source of distillers grains for feed. The demand loss is bearish for locally sourced grain, while reduced DDGS supply is supportive for its price.
