Canola futures on ICE Winnipeg closed lower in overnight trading, weighed down by weakness in vegetable oils. Chicago soyoil, European rapeseed and Malaysian palm oil also traded lower, while crude oil rose after two vessels and a tugboat caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz.
Nearly 15,800 contracts traded, with the January contract at C$765.10 per tonne, down C$3.20.
Canola prices track vegetable oil values, so weaker soyoil and palm oil pull canola meal and seed lower for feed buyers. Renewed Hormuz tensions lift energy costs and can support vegetable oil prices through biofuel links.
