Platts, the price reporting agency of S&P Global Energy, has launched a Spanish Pork Feed Cost Indicator that will track weekly how much feed costs relative to the price of pork meat. The indicator was created at the request of Spanish feed and animal protein producers and took effect this week.
Feed typically accounts for 60% to 70% of pig producers' costs.
Corn and soymeal price increases can quickly erode Spanish pig producers' margins, so a weekly feed-to-meat price ratio improves visibility into when grain rallies squeeze profitability. The launch adds a benchmark for pricing feed-related contracts but does not by itself move grain prices.
