The Baltic Exchange main sea freight index rose 1.7% to 2,740 points on Thursday, its highest level since October 13. Capesize rates gained 2.3% to 4,191 points and Panamax rates rose 3.3% to 1,956 points, while the Supramax index fell 0.6%.
Iron ore prices also reached a one-month high.
Higher Capesize and Panamax rates raise the cost of moving bulk cargoes such as grains and soybeans, which can narrow origin-destination price spreads. The move is modest and driven by larger vessel segments, so the effect on feed ingredient prices is limited.
