The Pacific Maritime Association and ILWU Local 26 extended their contract through midnight Pacific Time on November 6, delaying a potential walkout by about 250 port watchmen at Los Angeles and Long Beach. Federal mediators are assisting talks, and PMA has warned that other ILWU members could honor any picket line.
A walkout would threaten terminals handling more than half the ports' cargo, including large shares of US export containers, which could delay feed ingredient shipments and raise ocean freight costs. The extension lowers near-term risk, but the outcome remains uncertain.
