Artisanal fishermen on Peru's coast report daily catches falling from around 200 kilos to under 20 kilos as warmer sea temperatures linked to El Niño push fish stocks to cooler waters. Landings are down as much as 40% in parts of the artisanal sector, and shortages of chita, pejerrey and flounder are forcing changes in fishing routes and gear.
Shellfish such as langostino are also affected by higher larval mortality.
Lower Peruvian landings reduce raw material for fishmeal and fish oil, a key protein input for feed producers, supporting firm fishmeal prices. Tighter domestic supply also pushes consumers toward alternative species.
