China's breeding sow inventory fell to 36.02 million at the end of Q3, 4.7% below the previous quarter and 10.7% lower year on year, and below the 37.50 million benchmark. Producers have been losing about 300 RMB per head for 14 months, and small, high-cost operations are exiting.
Sow culling typically cuts market-ready pig supply about 10 months later, which points to tighter hog supply in 1H 2027 and firmer hog prices. Lower sow numbers also mean weaker feed demand in the near term.
