Japanese sardine fishermen off eastern Hokkaido recorded no catch this season, the first zero season in about 25 years, halting fishmeal plants. Japan's fisheries agency estimates Pacific sardine biomass fell from over 5 million tonnes in 2022 to 1.69 million tonnes in 2025 and proposes cutting the 2027 catch limit sharply.
Losing Japanese sardine supply removes another fishmeal and fish oil source at a time when Peru's catch is also constrained, tightening global fishmeal supply and supporting prices.
