Oklahoma wheat producers report nitrogen fertilizer costs of $635 to $700 per ton, up from $220 to $275 a year earlier. Cash wheat prices have also risen sharply, to $7.81-$8.32 per bushel from about $5 a year ago.
Nitrogen now represents a large share of wheat production cost, which may reduce planting or application and tighten future wheat supply while keeping farmers reliant on higher grain prices.
