Malaysia's Ministry of Finance said in a written reply to Parliament that it wants more cross-border trade and investment settled in ringgit and partner currencies, using BRICS cooperation to get there. The ministry stressed that any shift must be market-driven.
Malaysia already has a renminbi-ringgit arrangement with China and a Local Currency Transaction Framework with Indonesia and Thailand.
Wider local-currency settlement would reduce dollar conversion costs for Malaysian traders, but any shift in the near term is likely to be gradual. It has little immediate effect on agricultural prices.
