The Baltic Exchange dry bulk freight index rose 4% to 2,694 points on Wednesday, ending a two-day losing streak, led by larger vessels. The capesize index jumped 7.2% to 4,097 points, while the panamax index rose 1.5% to a near one-week high after 15 sessions of declines.
The supramax index fell 0.6% to its lowest since October 13.
Higher panamax and capesize rates raise the cost of shipping grain and soybeans, which can widen the spread between origin and destination prices. The mixed supramax move suggests the rebound is concentrated in larger vessels rather than broad-based.
