An analysis from The Conversation says small fish such as sardinella are a key protein source in West Africa, and some are increasingly exported or processed into fishmeal and fish oil for aquaculture feed. It notes that about a quarter of wild-caught fish go into fishmeal and fish oil, and that El Niño can weaken upwelling and reduce plankton and fish availability.
Marine ingredient supply is tied to upwelling conditions, so El Niño-driven declines in catches can tighten fishmeal and fish oil availability. That supports fishmeal prices for aquaculture and livestock feed buyers.
