Several Chinese coastal methanol-to-olefins (MTO) plants, including Ningbo Fude, Nanjing Chengzhi, Luxi, Sierbang and Lianhong Gerun, have shut down or cut operating rates because margins turned negative after a sharp spot methanol price rise. Restarts are not expected soon, and port-side spot purchasing has weakened with more failed spot auctions and falling basis levels.
MTO accounts for nearly half of China's methanol demand, so lower run rates reduce feedstock buying and push methanol prices and basis lower. For feed buyers this is an energy-chemical signal with limited direct effect on feed grain prices.
