CME lean hog futures fell to contract lows on Tuesday as demand for US pork weakened, with the December contract settling at 58.600 cents per pound. Live cattle and feeder cattle futures also declined, with December live cattle touching the lowest since September 18 and January feeder cattle at the lowest since October 8, amid uncertainty over demand for high-priced US beef.
Weak domestic and export demand for pork and beef is pushing livestock futures lower despite ample hog supplies, which pressures meat prices and the outlook for livestock-linked feed demand. Buyers of feed for cattle and hog operations may see reduced margins and weaker animal-numbers outlooks.
