An October 24 explosion and fire at PepsiCo's Quaker Oats plant in downtown Cedar Rapids destroyed the fifth floor of the building where it started and left the fourth and fifth floors structurally compromised. As of October 30 the company had no timeline for resuming production at the facility, described as the world's largest milling plant, processing more than 2 million pounds of oats daily.
The outage removes a major oat milling capacity, tightening demand for oat supplies and oat-based feed and food ingredients while the restart date is unknown. The effect on prices is likely modest given the broad oat market, but it is a notable disruption to processing flows.
After 13 past logistics events, Oats moved a median -1.9% over 5 sessions (23% higher; middle half -5.2% to -0.6%), and +1.5% over 20.
