Benchmark US natural gas futures traded near $2.80 per MMBtu in New York on Friday. Spot gas for weekend delivery at Sumas, Washington, near the Canadian border, surged to $200 per MMBtu, the highest spot price recorded in the US, as frigid temperatures drove traders to scramble for supplies.
Extreme regional cold pulled spot supply into a single constrained pocket of the gas grid. For feed buyers the signal is indirect, since gas-fired power and gas-based fertilizer costs can tighten when cold snaps hit.
After 221 past bullish weather events, NATGAS moved a median +3.3% over 5 sessions (61% higher; middle half -5.2% to +14.0%), and -0.3% over 20.
