The rupiah weakened 8 points to Rp18,168 per US dollar on November 4. Indonesia's trade ministry reported a September trade surplus of $3.36 billion, down from $3.55 billion in August, with imports up 18.41% year on year against exports up 11.87%.
A narrowing surplus and faster import growth increase Indonesia's foreign currency demand, which keeps the rupiah under pressure and makes dollar-priced feed imports more expensive. Strong US labor data also supports the dollar.
