Peru's Production Minister Juan Carlos Requejo made an unannounced visit to Chimbote to meet artisanal fishing organisations about the effects of El Niño on the sector. Officials said more than 35 norms have been issued since August 15 to revive the activity, and exploratory bonito fishing and giant squid extraction were discussed.
Few fishermen attended the meeting.
The government response to El Niño-related fishing losses is a policy signal about how quickly Peruvian small-scale catch may recover, which bears on anchoveta and fishmeal supply. The meeting itself is a low-impact step with no immediate change to output.
