UK milk processor Freshways has cut its base milk price by 7ppl to 29.4ppl for December, reversing earlier increases of 3ppl from September 1 and 6ppl from October 1. Managing director Bali Nijjar said selling prices had not risen enough to recover those costs and that the company had lost volume in a competitive liquid milk market.
AHDB analyst Susie Stannard warned other processors might follow with similar cuts.
A sharp farmgate price cut by a major UK buyer signals weaker liquid milk demand and margin pressure, which could spread to other processors and lower UK dairy farm incomes.
