Indian companies cut forward dollar purchases by 35% in October to $49.5 billion, an eight-month low, from a record high in September. The decline followed Reserve Bank of India measures against speculative bets on the rupee, which raised the cost of building dollar positions.
The rupee has risen about 2% since those measures.
Costlier hedging reduces importer dollar demand and eases rupee pressure, which can lower India's feed import costs. Analysts say the measures are tactical, so the currency may stay volatile while oil prices remain high.
