Lamb producers in western Victoria and South Australia report lambs stalling at 40 to 49 kilograms because clover failed to establish on pastures, leaving them short of nutrition. Barley is forecast to fall sharply in price after a big harvest, and producers are enquiring about grain finishing.
Cheaper barley could let producers finish lambs and lift slaughter supply, easing tight processor supply and strong lamb prices. Barley demand from the sheep sector is small, so the effect on feed grain prices is limited.
