Egypt floated its pound on 3 November 2016 to eliminate the parallel market and restore dollar liquidity. The dollar has since risen from about 8.88 pounds to roughly 55.48 pounds, with repeated devaluations driven by capital outflows, the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the Gaza conflict.
Egypt is a major importer of feed grains and soymeal, so a weaker pound raises the local-currency cost of imported feed ingredients. Continued pressure on the pound keeps the USD/EGP rate pushing feed costs higher for Egyptian buyers.
