CoBank estimates that a $1-per-bushel rally across corn, soybean and wheat futures could generate about $9.6 billion in margin calls for commercial grain firms. Heavy farmer selling has raised elevator ownership of physical grain, and traders hold large net short positions.
Margin calls could create a short-term liquidity squeeze for elevators, which may affect grain movement, payment timing and local merchandising if volatility rises. The effect is financial and does not itself change supply or demand.
