Highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza was confirmed on 2 November in a commercial free-range laying flock near Biggar in the Scottish Borders. Protection and surveillance zones were declared the same evening.
It is the second H5N1 case in Great Britain this 2026/27 season, after a Northumberland flock on 19 October.
Culling and movement restrictions in a laying flock reduce local egg supply and can tighten feed demand from affected producers. The effect on feed prices is small because the outbreak is localized.
