The USACE Rock Island District reports that work continues on a mooring cell in Pool 16 of the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. The cell is expected to finish this week and be ready for industry use in early December after a 28-day concrete curing period.
The new mooring cell gives towboats a place to wait for barges, reducing groundings and erosion damage in the pool. Smoother barge movement on this stretch supports grain shipments, though the effect on prices is minor.
