Highly pathogenic avian influenza has hit commercial turkey flocks in four US states over the past ten days, including a 44,400-bird flock in Sac County, Iowa, confirmed October 28. Confirmed losses total roughly 237,000 turkeys, which is small relative to US production, and USDA has not attributed any Thanksgiving price increase to these outbreaks.
Losses are small relative to national turkey output, so the effect on feed demand and prices is likely limited, though a broader spread could tighten poultry supply.
