Three years of Swedish trials found that mycoprotein, insect meal and mussel meal can replace soy and fishmeal in feed for fish, chickens, pigs and laying hens, with lower environmental impact. Scaling up will require investment, long-term purchasing commitments and clearer regulation.
Viable alternative proteins could gradually reduce demand for soy and fishmeal, but commercial volumes remain small and the effect on prices is not yet visible. The results are a research update rather than a market event.
