The Scottish Government confirmed H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza on a poultry farm near Biggar in the Scottish Borders on 2 November 2026. A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone were set up, restricting poultry, egg, and carcass movements, manure and slurry spreading, and game bird releases.
Dairy, sheep and goat movements now need individual APHA licences.
A single farm outbreak in Britain is a small, localised supply hit to poultry, but repeated outbreaks raise biosecurity-driven culling risk and modestly support chicken prices.
