Cattle slaughter was estimated at 104,000 head, down from 106,000 a week earlier, with the prior week's total at 543,000 head. The most active December cattle contract closed 125 points lower at $219.70, its fifth straight lower close.
Beef trim prices are also falling, and packer competition for fed cattle continues.
Slaughter running above 540,000 head per week adds beef supply and weighs on cutout and trim values, which pressures live cattle prices. Softer cattle prices can reduce feedlot margins and the appetite for feed purchases.
