Sowing of India's rabi crops was 46% lower as of October 30, at 37.56 lakh hectares against 69.02 lakh a year earlier, according to the Agriculture Ministry's weekly update. Mustard, pulses and wheat plantings were all sharply down, and wheat sowing had barely started.
Officials said insufficient moisture and high daytime temperatures delayed planting, and that sowing is expected to pick up as temperatures cool.
A sharp shortfall in winter sowing raises the risk of lower Indian wheat and pulse output, which could tighten domestic supply and support import demand and prices if the delay persists.
