Rain in northern Queensland and northern New South Wales, combined with dry conditions in the southwest of NSW, has produced lightweight barley entering the feed market. Buyers are blending it with better-quality grain, and rain-affected paddocks may not meet the BAR1 grade of 62.5 kg/hl.
Lower-quality barley supply in eastern Australia can weigh on feed barley values for the spread between grades, while wheat weight held up better. Feedlots and other buyers will have to blend or switch rations, which tightens demand for top-grade barley.
