New Zealand has confirmed a second H5 bird flu case, this time in a native kāhu hawk, following a brown skua seabird case earlier in the week. The government is adding bird checks in the Wairarapa region and supporting free-range poultry and egg farms.
Officials say chicken and eggs remain safe to eat.
The cases are in wild birds, and officials state there is no commercial poultry impact so far. Feed demand effects are limited unless infection reaches commercial flocks.
