Mexican producer and researcher Manuel Alvarado Pérez said Mexico is not food sovereign because it imports more than half its corn. He said Mexico spends about 1% of GDP on agricultural research, compared with up to 7% in developed countries, and cited imports of up to 27 million tonnes.
The remarks reinforce a long-running dependence on imported corn that supports demand for US and other foreign corn. They are opinion rather than a new policy or supply event, so the price impact is minor.
After 729 past bullish trade events, Corn moved a median +0.4% over 5 sessions (56% higher; middle half -1.1% to +1.8%), and +0.5% over 20.
Moves of each commodity's benchmark from the last close before the event. Historical reads pool past events of the same kind; they describe what happened, not what will. Not investment advice.
