Malaysia's benchmark January palm oil futures fell 0.49% to 4,658 ringgit per metric ton as crude oil dropped more than 1%. Rival edible oils in China, including Dalian soyoil and Dalian palm, firmed while US soyoil edged higher.
Palm oil competes with diesel as a biodiesel feedstock, so cheaper crude weakens biodiesel margins and reduces demand for palm oil. Soyoil and palm oil move together in the edible oil complex, so the lower crude price is a modest bearish signal for palm and soyoil.
