USDA confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza on October 29 in a 45,000-bird commercial meat turkey flock in Sac County, Iowa. It is the state's first commercial poultry infection in 2026 and follows nearly 11 months without one.
Seven backyard flocks in Iowa have also tested positive this year.
Culling removes turkey supply in a single county, which has a limited effect on overall poultry prices. Continued spread across US and Canadian flocks raises the risk of wider losses and more feed-demand uncertainty.
