Venture Global's Plaquemines LNG plant in Louisiana completed Phase 1 commissioning and began commercial operations, with Shell receiving the first cargo under a long-term contract. Phase 1 customers including Shell, Orlen, Sinopec, CNOOC and EDF are expected to receive LNG under long-term deals priced well below current spot levels near 46-month highs.
New US export capacity adds supply to global LNG markets, which over time eases the spot premium that has supported gas prices. The effect is gradual because the cargoes are only starting to flow and the sales are contracted rather than spot.
