South Africa's Department of Agriculture declined to impose a countrywide restriction on poultry imports from Brazil after a Newcastle disease outbreak in Santa Catarina, notified on 20 October. Only Santa Catarina is barred from exporting to South Africa, and existing veterinary certificates allow fresh poultry meat, hatching eggs and day-old chicks to keep trading under conditions.
The South African Poultry Association says it expects no change in import volumes or prices, which are about 18,000 tonnes of poultry meat per month.
The limited scope of the restriction keeps Brazilian chicken flowing into South Africa, so local feed demand and poultry pricing are unlikely to shift. Any broader ban would tighten supply and lift poultry-linked feed demand, but that risk is currently seen as low.
