The dollar-yen monthly trading range in October was 2.87 yen, the narrowest in four and a half years, as the yen traded between the low 156s and high 158s. CFTC data show hedge funds' net short yen positions fell to about 14,000 contracts as of October 27, roughly one-eighth of the late-June peak.
The decline is attributed to coordinated US and Japanese intervention to buy yen in July.
Reduced speculative yen shorting lowers the chance of a sharp yen slide that would raise Japanese import costs for feed. The calmer currency backdrop also reduces near-term FX-driven swings in dollar-priced grain and oilseed values.
