Imported frozen mackerel prices in South Korea have more than doubled since January, with September import prices at 7,182 won per kg, up 75.5% year on year. Norway's mackerel quota fell to about 81,000 tons this year, a 50.9% drop, following an ICES recommendation to curb catches.
South Korean imports from January to September fell 41.9%.
Norway is Korea's top mackerel supplier, so the sharp quota cut tightens import supply and keeps landed prices elevated, while domestic prices soften on higher local output. Buyers of mackerel-linked feed or bait inputs should expect continued firmness in imported fish prices.
