The Los Angeles and Long Beach employer group and ILWU Local 26 agreed on Oct. 30 to extend negotiations for about 250 maritime watchmen to Nov.
5, averting a possible strike. The watchmen control gate entries and guard cargo at terminals handling about 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% of Los Angeles cargo, and both ports reported record September volumes.
A strike at these terminals would disrupt cargo flows during record volumes and could tighten ocean freight capacity, which would raise export costs for US feed commodities.
