Evonik agreed to acquire METEX's fermentative methionine technology package, including patents, bacteria strains and the inoLa brand. The agreement was signed in Paris on November 28 and still needs Evonik committee approval.
The deal includes a back license so METEX can keep using certain patents outside methionine.
Fermentation-based methionine could eventually offer a lower-cost alternative to chemical synthesis, which would add competitive pressure on methionine prices over the longer term. The near-term market impact is limited.
