Evonik held a groundbreaking in October for a second methionine plant on Jurong Island, Singapore, with a planned capacity of 150,000 metric tons per year. The company will invest over 500 million euros, bringing its Singapore capacity to 300,000 tons and its global capacity to about 730,000 tons.
Completion is slated for 2019.
Evonik's expansion adds substantial future methionine supply, which points to downward pressure on prices once the plant starts up. Feed producers should expect more supply in the 2019 to 2020 period.
