Evonik Industries has submitted a bid to acquire the methionine fermentation technology of French biotech Metabolic Explorer, with the price reportedly at least half of that company's roughly $63 million market value. Global methionine sales exceed $3 billion annually, and most animal-feed amino acids other than methionine are made by fermentation.
A potential shift to fermentation-based methionine production could eventually change the cost structure and supply base of a major feed amino acid, but the deal is at bid stage and has no near-term price impact.
