Colorado State economist Stephen Koontz reports that fall calf sales have seen unusually weak basis, with some 4-5 weight calves selling $15 to $25 per cwt below expectations. Many producers have delayed marketing as cheap hay is plentiful and mild weather has eased pressure to sell.
Delayed marketing points to higher-than-normal feeder placements later this year and into next, which increases feedlot demand for feed. Weak calf prices reflect ample supply and low feeding margins.
