The rupiah strengthened sharply against the US dollar on January 5, 2017, rising 0.83% to about IDR 13,328 per dollar. The move followed a retreat of the dollar from a near 14-year peak against major currencies, ahead of the Federal Reserve's December policy minutes.
The yuan also rallied after two days of sharp weakness.
A stronger rupiah lowers the local cost of imported feed inputs and raises Indonesian buying power, though the effect on global feed prices is small. The move reflects broader dollar swings that can shift emerging-market import costs.
